What is victimisation?
The Equality Act 2010 is the law that says you can’t be discriminated. It is illegal to discriminate against anyone who is in violation of the Equality Act. You can also take legal action at the civil courts.
Victimisation refers to when someone does something that is unfair or degrading to you. The Equality Act recognizes that you might be concerned about complaining and provides additional legal protection when you file a complaint about discrimination.
What does it mean to be detrimental?
Detriment is when you have been placed in a more difficult situation than before or suffered some kind of disadvantage.
It is illegal for someone to make you feel bad because you are a victim of unlawful discrimination, or because they believe you may be guilty of it.

What is the reason for discrimination?
Discrimination can be a result of:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Marriage or civil partnership
- Maternity and pregnancy
- Race
- Religion or belief
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
What is the law protecting you from?
- Only one thing can protect you from being victimized:
- You can make a complaint or claim of discrimination under Section 201 of the Equality Act
- Give evidence or information to someone who has filed a claim or complaint under the Act
- Do anything else that is related to the Act
- Declare that someone has committed an offense under the Act.
- These are known as protected acts.
- You don’t need to be a victim of discrimination or have a protected characteristic.

Is it important that you were victimized long after you had complained?
The victimization must occur within a reasonable time after you have complained or done another protected act. It is important that you were not treated poorly because of your protected acts.
What are the chances of being victimized?
If you make false accusations or give false information, you are not protected from victimization.
